2013: Manda Tradition (3)


Annual Silent Day or Nyepi Day held simultaneously every year around Bali. However there are several traditional villages also implement its own Nyepi Day in addition to the above National Nyepi Day. This Nyepi is often referred to as Nyepi Desa or Nyepi Adat. Desa Bugbug is included in the village that carry out its own Nyepi Adat.





A day before implementing Nyepi Adat, there is always a ceremonial procession carried out by indigenous peoples. Like a parade, they walk around the village in two lines (known as manda tradition), followed by all elements of society. With the increasing number of villagers, during implementation represented by the pemangku (pinandita), community leaders (Kelian Desa Adat, Bandesa Adat, Prajuru Desa, Nayaka, and other components of the village), young sacred kids (taruna pasting), and adolescents (daha-teruna desa). They brought with them the ceremony means (upakara) and other religious symbols (sasurukan, cepetik, etc.) accompanied by rhythm of gamelan / gong village. The ceremony was centered in Pura Piit and Pura Desa/Baleagung.


This ceremony to honor Ida Betara Raja Purana or Ida Betara Agung Mahagumi that has put social and religious fondations to this society in 11th century. He is believed the manifestation of Siwa, the God, the authority of the universe giving welfare to all followers . The next day, the community implement catur berata penyepian with silence.
